A lot of graphic designers can claim they have the exact capabilities and skillset for your project.
The same person who can do your local library brochure pamphlets can also do your flame car decal sticker or your gig poster for your band.
With this range of demand from graphic designers, there is leniency on templated materials and assets. This affords a faster turn around time and the ability to make more money in less time. There is a whole range of royalty-free, stock graphics that can be quickly downloaded and forwarded onto clients.
When trusting and hiring what you perceive as a professional, it’s hard to be on top of all of the possibilities of getting stuck with “dud” work. The risk taken with all of these pre-made assets is that you won’t be represented uniquely. Chances are that you could potentially see a slight variation of your project out there in the world.
We all know of the running joke that stock photography can be positioned as. The number of times that we see the same image used for a range of different industries. Whether it’s a travel business using the same picture of a happy family as the real estate company or even the healthcare provider. Dealing with graphic designers who aren’t at the peak of their craft are susceptible to using these templated solutions to save their bottom line.
I use my hands to build custom elements that can’t be downloaded online.
This alone is what has attracted me to illustration and graphic design. I spend hours practising and painstakingly making sure that everything I do is tweaked and created by my own hands. I was sick and tired of relying on all of these preset tools that would do the job for me and take the creativity out of the experience. I enjoy sketching out logo concepts. I love pulling from the brief and watching something unfold before me that didn’t exist before. I appreciate the craft and have a deep passion for creating something unique. I use my hands to build custom elements that can’t be downloaded online. I spend the time to develop unique solutions.
I spend time outside of working on client projects to continually ensure my skillset is expanding and I’m routinely getting better. Most people perceive this as doing extra work that’s not necessary. But my focus, belief and passion lies in doing the best I can do. I want to be prepared for any project like an athlete before a big game.
As important as it is for an athlete to hit the gym regularly, I spend time developing my craft to help build and exceed expectations. Being that my profession is being able to draw custom graphics solutions, it’s essential that my skillset remains at the highest level possible to be able to adapt to any challenging project that comes my way.
...why not embed yourself into something of quality that will be a one-stop lasting solution?
This isn’t to discredit anyone that seeks out and needs a cheaper and more affordable solution. All businesses have different and conflicting priorities. It’s hard to justify the expense of investing in a visual identity or brand. But if you’re going to spend money, why not embed yourself into something of quality that will be a one-stop lasting solution. It’s similar to buying a new home appliance. Sure the cheaper options will make your bank balance look a lot happier after the initial spend. But with the frustration of continually making service calls, getting the equipment repaired and the money that’s needed for the “out of warranty circumstances” is draining.
We can all agree that a premium, more durable product tends to come with a bigger price tag. Which is the same with any service related industry. It can be hard investing in an industry that you don’t have the full scope and knowledge on. But the most important factor is trying to find a working professional that you can trust.
